The banana pepper (also known as the yellow wax pepper or banana chili) is a medium-sized member of the chili pepper family that has a mild, tangy taste. While typically bright yellow, it is possible for them to change to green, red, or orange as they ripen. It is often pickled, stuffed or used as a raw ingredient in foods. It is a cultivar of the species Banana Pepper annuum. Its flavor is not very hot (0–500 Scoville units), and as is the case with most peppers, its hotness depends on the maturity of the pepper, with the most ripe being sweeter than younger ones.

Growing Instructions

Select a tray or flowering pot indoor filled with fertile soil with drain holes and sow the seeds. Cover the seeds with very thin layer of soil. The soil thickness should be as thick as that of the seed only. Cover the container with a thin cotton cloth. Spray water over the cloth and see that the seeds inside is not disturbed and the soil gets wet. Water once daily. Seeds start to grow from 8th day onwards. After the seeds have germinated remove the cloth covering and start to water well. After it has reached about 1 ½ inch height, it can be replanted outdoor with a spacing of at least 18 inches between plants. Plants grow up to 40 cm in height. Harvest time is about 85 days. Banana Pepper grows well in full sun and likes warm climate. Germination rate of seeds are up to 70-80%. Banana Pepper grows well in pots also. Use manures for best yield.

Note: Growing the seeds by covering with cloth gives more quick and successful germination.
