Growing Instructions

Small onion grows well in sunny or sheltered sites with well drained soil. Add manures well in advance before planting. Fresh manures can cause rot to the root. It prefers to be grown directly in soil and does not grow well in containers or raised beds. Small onions forms in clusters. Sow the seeds indoors at a depth of ¼ inch and water well until germination. Germination takes from 6 to 12 days.  Transplant them after 6 to 8 weeks or when the plants are 15 cm height. Leave a spacing of 4 inches between plants and a row spacing of 12 inches. Water occasionally when the soil gets dry or every 5 to 7 days. Nitrogen rich fertilizers can be applied during growing. When the leaves begins to drop, stop watering and allow it to dry before harvest. Onions should be dug out using a garden fork.
