Ash Gourd Seeds

Ash gourd (Benincasa hispidia) is a vegetable used mainly for culinary purpose.  It is a large sized round or elongated  fruit which  weighs average of 8 kg.

It needs large space for growing and yields with in 90 days of sowing.  Color turns to waxy at maturity.

Any open space with good sun shine and water is enough for growing this. It is resistant to high monsoon rains.

In Ayurveda, ash gourd is used to treat epilepsy, asthma, lung diseases, urine retention, internal haemorrhage, and cough.

The fruit juice is also effective in cases of mercury poisoning and snakebites. It can even treat mouth cancer, protecting teeth and gums when a mouth gargle of the juice is done regularly. It is also effective in bleeding of gums.

Germination Period – 10 to 15 days.

 

Growing Instructions

Ash Gourd needs large area for growing and needs full sun. Some varieties of Ash Gourd may grow up to 25 feet in length. So select a sunny spot with sandy soil and add enough manure to the soil. You can sow the seeds directly in the soil at a depth of around 1 inch depth. Don’t worry about which end of the seed is up and the plant will find its way out. Leave at least 10 – 15 feet between plants so that they need enough space to spread. Water well each day until the seed germinates. Germination time may take up to 7 - 10 days.  Do not water too much. But water well, when the soil loses its dampness or the plant looks droopy. Deep but infrequent watering results in healthier plant. Harvest days will be from 85 to 125 days depending on the climatic conditions.
